The ripples in the sand on the beach are often echoed in the cloud forms above. Fresh water springs running down the sand to the sea carve intricate fans and channels that are replicated in river deltas when seen from the air.·“The myriad cracks and whorls in the surface of a glacier are the same as the skin texture on the back of my hand.”

As a disabled artist I have developed a unique view of landscape as an expression of my personal interaction with the· environment.·With limited mobility and energy,I began to pay more attention to the things immediately around me, and to see and record the minute detail of natural pattern.

Ruth is a studio artist at Woodend Creative Workspace, Scarborough.

Ruth is also half of the performing duo – Gingernut & Tripod – who present cabaret – style shows of their own writing. To date G&T have devised three shows – 2013 Gingernut & Tripod Scoff the Lot a feast of poems, stories and songs about food for Coastival, 2014 G&T Move the Earth a whistlestop tour through different phases of life and G&T Sail the Seven Seas in 2015, around the globe and beyond for salty tales on the ocean wave!

CV Highlights

1985  to 2005  Project manager and workshop leader in disability and community arts – leading writing, drama, photography and low-tech multi-media workshops. Writer and director Mustn’t Grumble, disabled women’s theatre group.

1991/92   Steering group, curator and contributor  for Access to Image – a two year project to raise profile of disability representation at The National Museum of Photography. Main Gallery Exhibition by David Hevey, conference and  open submission exhibition, Access to Image, toured nationally by Impressions Gallery, York.



1997 – 2005 Artistic Director Stalking Histories. A multi-media company developing performance and new work discovering lost disability history.

2005   Wrote and performed one woman show The Chemical Wedding  at Unity Theatre Liverpool and Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal. Video, puppetry and live filming

2008 Liverpool Biennial Interview. Worked with Otto Karvonen, international conceptual artist, to develop writing for website and develop lift installation for Tate, Liverpool. 

2009  The Haircut video installation exploring gender, self-image and representation.

2010 BIND video installation with performance about cross dressing and gender identity. 

2012 East Coast Open, Scarborough Art Gallery.

2013 Art Talk Goes to Sledmere – group show at The Triton Gallery, Sledmere House Coastival exhibition of ceramic work at Studio Gallery, Scarborough. From the Middle to the Edge exhibition of photographs and prints at Cafe Venus. Gingernut & Tripod Scoff the Lot, an evening of performance writing on food for Scarborough Lit Fest Fringe
